I spent 30 years as a high school teacher. "Teacher" doesn't encompass all of the roles I played! Counselor, therapist, relationship guide, mentor, mother hen .......

One well-worn piece of advice was that they had to make decisions for them - not for me, not parents, not girl/boy friends - they were the ones who would live with their decisions. Don't rely on others to make choices for you. Choose for yourself & choose you as the priority in your own life.

Sometimes I wound up advising parents on how to deal with their teens. "Your kid has to care more about their education than you & I do." They have to make the choices & they have to live with them. That's not saying to ignore everyone else or be a narcissistic ass!
